As a girl who loves books I was so excited to join the #BeCurlCentric Tour to support a pretty awesome coloring book for all the cute little curly kids both young and old who enjoy crayons and creativity. As you know diversity in pop culture don’t typically showcase the beauty of being natural. Little brown boys and girls really need to see more images that look like them on tv, at the movies, and in books.
Akirashanti Byrd author and co-founder of CurlCentric.com is adding a little diversity to the realm of coloring books with the launch of “Curly Kids Coloring Book“. I had the pleasure of checking out a sneak peek and it’s absolutely prettiful.
One of my favorite pass times as a child was coloring with my mama and brothers growing up. We would take brown crayons and color in Snow White, Cinderella, and/or Sleeping Beauty. As an 80’s kid the idea of a curly kid coloring book or an African-American themed coloring book was unfathomable. Thanks to Kira curly kids coming of age will now have the ability to see themselves in a fun and interactive coloring book.
Kira created “A Curly Kids Coloring Book” with her young daughter in mind; her goal is to guide her daughter and help her foster a healthy relationship early, with her hair and natural beauty.
The Curly Kids Coloring book was created for little girls and boys (A LOT OF TIMES LITTLE BOYS ARE IGNORED BUT THEY NEED AFFIRMATION TOO!), but adults have found the images helpful in their natural hair journey as well. It’s not about age. It’s more so about seeing naturally textured hair, that is relatable in a positive manner that helps you appreciate natural hair even more!
Kira had the following to say about “A Curly Kids Coloring Book”,
Curly Kids Coloring Book is a new product that has over 30 images that’s waiting to be colored with imagination. I understand it is important for little girls to see images that look like them and that these images need to be shown in a positive way. The coloring book includes action shots, mermaids, princesses, and ballerinas! Plus styles include but aren’t limited to bantu knots, wash & gos. two strand twists, locs, afros puff and many many more.
I feel like the coloring book has done its job every time a parent tells me or I read an Amazon review that their child said, “Mommy, her hair looks just like mine!”
