This Memorial Day weekend has been so exciting because I got the chance to sit down and chat with singer/actor Ginuwine about his new film “Chocolate City” a coming to age tale about a young man making it in the world of male exotic dancing starring Robert Ri’chard, Tyson Beckford, Deray Davis, Vivica A Fox, and Michael Jai White. I absolutely LOVE Ginuwine; I have been a fan since the days of “Pony”. I had the opportunity to tell him that I love his entire catalogue and that I listen to “Stingy” often (it’s truly one of my favorite songs ever). Ginuwine was bubbling with excitement as he shared about “Chocolate City” and his desire to do more acting as he continues to create great love music.
Ginuwine told me that “Chocolate City” is nothing like the super popular “Magic Mike” movies that are all about exotic dancing. Ginuwine says that the comparisons between ‘Chocolate City’ and ‘Magic Mike’ are unfair because each movie has their on stories and they are nothing alike. Ginuwine shared,
“Chocolate City” have some great actors and actresses and it’s a great story. I am excited that my fans will get the chance to see my acting chops; I had so much fun working on set brining my character to life. This is a great movie for a girls night out or a date night. I want people to feel comfortable about coming out to see this film because it’s more than just stripping and the nudity is not really there. You will see some great dancing and some great acting. It’s truly a WIN!”
Ginuwine portrays a character by the name of Pharaoh in the film. Pharaoh is an established dancer that is intimidated by the new and younger dancers in the club. I had to ask if there are any similarities between his character and Ginuwine as a person. Ginuwine laughed and assured me he is nothing like Pharaoh. Ginuwine shared that Pharaoh is very loud and brash versus his laid back and cool personality. Ginuwine shares,
“I am very laid back; not really shy because that sounds so young boy like. But we are totally opposites. I felt that if I could make people believe that I was like Pharaoh I have won the role. I had a great time working on set. I really enjoy acting; I am actually auditioning for various roles and I am taking my time to hone my craft. I want people to see me as an actor not a musician tapping into the world of acting. I want credibility. Actors and actresses work hard to be successful in their craft and I want to earn the title as actor. I hope to do a lot more movies!”
In addition to pursuing acting; Ginuwine is back in the studio working on his next album “Same Ol G” with super producer Timberland. The two made music magic happen in the 90’s with their hot beats that inspired dancing and love music that inspired happiness and the creation of happy families and babies. I got the opportunity to ask the singer his thoughts on today’s R&B music scene and will we ever get a true revival of the genre. Ginuwine shares,
“I am currently working on my next album that slated to drop at the end of 2015 or the top of 2016 entitled “Same Ol G”. I look forward to pumping out some great music for my fans and it’s so much fun getting back to work with Timberland. As far as R&B music goes it hasn’t gone anywhere. The problem with people in our generation is that we are basing our R&B tastes on young people. We can’t expect a teenager to understand 90’s music and we can’t expect R&B music to be played on radio stations that cater to teenagers. We need to support our generation’s music. That means seeking our those musicians and radio stations that play that sort of music.”
As you probably know Ginuwine teamed up with Tank and Tyrese to create the ultimate 90’s boy band a couple of summers ago to celebrate love music. The trio traveled around the country putting on shows and the album was amazing. When asked about TGT, Ginuwine quickly shared that TGT is simply on hiatus as each star pursue his own solo project but once they can all slow down at the same time they plan on making more boy band magic.
As a girl I had to ask Ginuwine what tips he has to stay so physically fit. He looks the same what he did in the 90’s. I asked if he works very hard at maintaining his physique or if he’s blessed with great genetics. Ginuwine seemed surprise at the question and laughed. He shared the following get fine/stay fine tips:
“Thanks I am truly blessed. I do drink a lot of water. I can’t overemphasized how important it is to drink lots of water. When I was a young man I abused by body with junk be it alcohol or food. As I have gotten older; I realize how important it is to take care of your body. I believe moderation is the key to life. You can have a drink every so often or a piece of cake every so often. Just don’t eat and drink bad every single day. I don’t do much meats but I eat a whole lot of fish. I am blessed that I don’t have to go so hard at maintaining my fitness. I could really work on my consistency but for the most part; I do try my best to take care of myself.”
It was truly a treat to sit down and talk to Ginuwine. If you are looking for something to get into this Memorial Day weekend be sure to check out “Chocolate City”.
