Over the weekend I had the honor of accompanying my girl Yalanda over at Dryerbuzz.com to see Whoopi Live in concert at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. I am a huge fan of Whoopi Goldberg since the days of “Jumping Jack Flash” and when she brought my favorite book to life “The Color Purple“. When Yalanda asked me to accompany her to see Whoopi and that we might get the chance to meet her; I was over the moon with excitement.
We made our way to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre but unfortunately was too late to meet her before the performance. We both were kind of bummed by that but how many people can say that they had the pleasure of being invited to see Whoopi and invited to meet her? We decided to count our blessings and enjoy the show.
Whoopi is a HOOT! She is so candid, so honest, and refreshingly human. She shared jokes that ranged from her controversial thoughts on domestic abuse, being a great-grandmother before sixty, and her views on Cannabis. Once her set was over the lights came on and she graciously answered questions from her adoring fans. I pulled out my notepad and this is what I learned about Ms. Whoopi:
Whoopi’s Favorite Role to Date:
“Disney The Lion King” is her favorite role to date. She shared that her granddaughter was four or five years old when the film first came out. They attended the screening and sat next to James Earl Jones. Her granddaughter upon hearing James Earl Jones’ voice screeched “Dark Vader!”
Whoopi’s thoughts on ‘ABC’s The View’ new cast mates:
“I know them all and I’m comfortable. I wasn’t glad to lose my old cast.” She candidly shared that she’s still on the show because she has two years left on her contract. She insisted that’s the only reason why she’s still there.
Whoopi’s thoughts on Joan River’s passing:
“Joan was the funniest f***ing woman ever!
Whoopi on CONFIDENCE:
“When I was 12 years old I was going to see Romeo and Juliette with a friend. I was a total hippie. My friend said that my tye dye shirt and overalls was inappropriate and she was not going out with me looking like that. I declined to change so we did not go to the movies together. I asked my mom if I was wrong for refusing to change. Her mom asked her if she was ok with being different, marching to her own drum? She said that she was. Ever since she’s been her own individual.”
Whoopi’s next big project:
Working on a 10 part documentary series on entertainers of color from the 1800’s to the present.
Whoopi on Social Media:
“I like it sometimes.”
Whoopi on taking Risks:
“If you listen to critics you won’t accomplish nothing!”
Whoopi on dating with Children:
“Men sometimes have a hard time with women with kids. Because most men can’t understand that kids come first. A good mother will put her children first!”
Whoopi on handling Success:
“I know it’s hard for most people to approach. I try not to be an a**hole. When I step out the house I’m Whoopi Goldberg and I try to be nice to everybody.”
Whoopi on discovering her Gift:
“I didn’t know comedy was my gift. I liked to do it. I am lucky; there’s a lot of talented people in the world who haven’t gotten the opportunity to live our their dreams. I never wanted to be a comedian. I was an actor with stories to tell. I started doing it this way so I could get hired. I never wanted to be a comedian; I wanted to be a storyteller.”
Whoopi on Shoes:
I pick shoes that other people don’t wear. People on “The View” are fit. I don’t have that fit body. I have lost 30 lbs; I might not can beat them in dresses but I kill them with my shoes!
