Tyler Perry and Own shows us that soaps are still appreciated in today’s Reality TV driven society with the success of “The Haves and The Have Nots“. I grew up watching the stories with my mama and grandmothers. We were all about a good story. As a child growing up in the 80’s and 90’s many of my most memorable moments were spent in front of the tv wondering,
When will Victor and Nicki get back together?
Why is Brook Logan so appealing to all of the men on “The Bold & The Beautiful”?
When are they going to bring Riva Shane back to “Guiding Light”?
Riva Shane is my favorite soap heroine of all time. She brought me so much life at a very early ag. Her love affair with Josh Lewis was EPIC! I paused and whispered a RIP prayer for Ms. Chandler a couple of weeks back when I learned of Jeanne Cooper’s sudden death. The stories are definitely a fabric of my life and holds nostalgic memories for the women in my family. I was ecstatic to see the promo commercial of Tyler Perry’s “The Haves and The Have Nots“.
Seeing the commercial I knew that OWN and TP had struck gold. The commercial instantly took me back to the days of “Dynasty” and “Dallas“. Tyler Perry has channeled that nostalgic piece of television drama that I thought had died and gone to television heaven. I feared that reality tv hoodtastical and raunchy drama had taken the place of the stories that I grew up with and loved.
A good story is much-needed considering the decline and removal of many of our favorite stories. Shonda Rimes’ “Scandal“ is doing a magnificent job with filling the void but there can never be enough!
Per press release from OWN, the debut episode of Tyler Perry’s new original drama series “The Haves and the Have Nots” last night, drew 1.77 million viewers total, making it the highest rated series debut in network history.
