On Monday night, Kerry Washington hosted the launch of the 2014 Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Program dedicated to educating women about domestic violence and financial abuse. In a PSA Kerry Washington shared the following stats:
“One in four women will be a victim of domestic violence. Finances are almost always a weapon of choice. Taking away access to cash, destroying credit, jeopardizing jobs; financial abuse leaves invisible bruises that can take decades to heal.”
In light of the controversy involving NFL players Ray Rice, Ray McDonald, and the current conversation that is playing out in the media it seems like the perfect time to launch such a worthwhile initiative. So many women and children are victims of domestic violence and what better way to bring about awareness, garner funds, and show support than by rocking a pretty purple purse?
Purple is the color of domestic violence awareness, and the purple purse is a source of EMPOWERMENT for women. The Purple Purse Program is using the purse as a metaphor to bring about awareness for domestic violence awareness.
Only 500 purple purse will be made. Some purses will be given to celebrities to carry on the red carpet to draw attention to the issue of domestic violence. Some will be sold as a way to raise funds for the foundation. Others will be gifted to domestic abuse survivors
I absolutely love what the Purple Purse Program is all about making a social/political statement in pretty girl style. Check out the PSA below:
